Have you ever paused your crazy fast brain for a few seconds and realized how fast the past year went by? Everyone experiences this feeling from time to time, it’s one of our human flaws (or gifts?) but if you’re not psyched about it then here is a list of things you can do to reclaim that regret:

  1. Think about a period of time where time seemed slower where you felt more accomplished, more social, or more whatever is important to you. Make a list of what specific things you did (or didn’t do) during this time. Reorder them by priority and schedule them for next month in advance.
  2. Don’t play by society’s rules of happiness, define your own happiness. When making the list from step 1, make sure everything on this list are things YOU want to do, not things society wants you to do.
  3. Keep a journal and a log. Log every day in simple terms of what you did (watched this new movie, ate at this new restaurant, met friends at this new bar) and only journal (longer entries) for days that require more detail on the events or on your thoughts and feelings. Grab some tissues before you start writing though. Don’t wanna damage that precious Moleskine!
  4. Take photos and videos every day. I’m sure you have a fairly decent mobile device. Take advantage of the technology and document little moments every day. You don’t need to spend much time on this for the images and videos to add up over time. Bonus points if you make a slideshow at the end of the month/year.
  5. And last but not least, make a list of goals and log your progress and milestones! Some scientists will argue that without memory, we would lack identity. Keeping a log of your achievements and progress will be evidence you weren’t being a piece of garbage all year but it’s hard to cough up those details on your own straight from memory so don’t be stubborn, log your hustle and review it later like eye candy. It’s a healthy way to boost your self-esteem and will push you forward, just don’t BS it.
