A virtual private server (VPS) is essentially a computer running in the cloud. One server can host many instances of a computer operating system and they are available to rent for a variety of uses. Most often we would recommend a Windows-based computer to run Jelly Butler for simplicity's sake unless you have the skills to run Linux (then you don’t need this article).

Why use a VPS?

If you want to Jelly Butler, you need to keep the instance up and running 24/7 with little to no downtime. It needs to be available in order to provide liquidity and swap with users when they initiate a trade. An advantage of a VPS is that your rented server is located in a data center with 24/7 uptime. You’re unlikely to experience any downtime. You also don’t have to dedicate hardware or pay electricity costs at home.

How do you access a VPS?

On Windows, a VPS is accessed remotely usually through the “Remote Desktop Connection” app. You’ll access it by launching the start menu and start typing the word “remote” to search for the app. There are also ways to access a Windows VPS through both iOS, Android, and Mac computers.

Your hosting/service provider will assign you a computer name (in the form of an IP address similar to what’s above) as well as a username and password:

Where to purchase a VPS?

There are dozens (or hundreds) of service providers that can rent you a VPS. The most important thing for new users is to look for an automated setup that provides a consumer-like experience without the need for technical configurations. As such, something like Amazon AWS or Microsoft Azure may be too complicated.

A well known and very popular VPS provider that provides automated deployment (it’s ready in about 10–20 minutes after ordering), the consumer-like experience out of the box, low rental cost, and a good reputation is Virmach. Here’s a direct link: https://virmach.com/windows-remote-desktop-vps/

Jelly Butler isn’t an intense software to run so we recommend the “SSD1G PLUS” plan for $8.50/mo, $23.25/quarter, or $85.00/year.

On the order screen:
· Select your frequency of payment
· Select your data center location (choose randomly to help decentralize Jelly Butler a bit)
· Choose Windows Server 2012 for an operating system
· Choose 1.5gb memory
· Choose 35gb disk space
· You do not need any of the premium options

Next, enter your customer details and choose your payment method. Virmach accepts the following payment methods.

Final note

After you order, you’ll receive an email very quickly with all of your login details. From personal experience do NOT try to access your VPS for about 15 minutes after you order. If you try to log in before the operating system is fully loaded by an automated process, it will fail and you’ll need to contact their support to fix it.

Once you have purchased your VPS, and accessed it with the instructions above, proceed to install Jelly Butler as if it was on any other Windows computer.

Warning

Choose wisely your server provider, because using a dedicated server means you give access to your private keys to the server provider. Paid hosting providers are not allowed to expose or use your personal private server and the data stored on it, but there is a small chance that they can do it internally or be violated by bad actors.
