The Mistranslation of the Lord’s Prayer
Fr Thomas Hopko says “it is tragic how the Lord’s prayer has been translated into English.”
I first heard him say this in a talk that he gave at Wheaton. You can hear him speak about the Lord’s prayer starting at minute 42:50.
He says the Lord’s prayer is “a total eschatological cry for the coming of the end of the ages by those who have already been crucified with Christ and belong to the age to come.”
I then read the transcript of this podcast on the Lord’s prayer.
I agree with him and have begun praying the Lord’s prayer like this:
Our Father, God above the heavens, God most high.
May your name be kept Holy.
May your kingdom come - come Lord Jesus!
May your will be done on earth, by your people, by me, as your will is done in Heaven, by Christ.
Give us today, Father, the food that we need, the bread of the age to come, Christ himself.
Forgive us our sins against you, known and unknown, things done and left undone, as we forgive those who have sinned against us.
Don’t let us yield to temptation when it comes, Father, but deliver us from evil. Keep us from sin. May sin not rule over us.
For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
