This is the success story of NAADHAM 2020, and how we managed about 340+ entries from 5 countries and 193 campuses.

In the era of COVID-19, the usage of social media and digital presence of people is at its peak and with 1 billion downloads, Instagram is the most used social media app in 2020. So we took advantage of this for the outreach of Jesus to the world. It was important to have a social media presence in this era of technology. To create an impact rapidly, we decided to host an online competition with an attractive prize pool for the winners.

NAADHAM ‘from the soul, to heal the soul’

NAADHAM was a Christian devotional song singing competition hosted by R&D Team of Jesus Youth Kerala Campus Ministry spanning from March 26 to April 19.

Our Journey From Ideation To Conclusion

We had countless Skype meetings and discussions enabling us to have a solid plan which was our ground of success. We made milestones and tried our best to see through it:

Understanding Where Our Audiences Are

  1. From Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, we selected Instagram due to its fame and ease of use. With such a high number of users, it was the best choice.
  2. The connectivity and promotion that Instagram provided were of great use. Posters and Stories could be shared across fellows JYs and friends increasing the outreach.
  3. The insights and its Facebook-like features, commenting and liking made Instagram our final decision.

Selection of Competition

An online competition was a great way to gather an audience quickly. So, an event that is simple to host and manage was what we needed. Thus we landed on a singing competition and selected Christian Devotional songs as its theme.

Entries

From WhatsApp, Google forms and Gmail we opted for the Google forms because it was strongly recommended by one of our team members, based on his previous experience. It was found very effective in managing the event registration. and due to its responsive nature, it was very useful to edit, manage and sort the entries. The registration was open for one week. The participants had to register with their email address, full name, WhatsApp number, Instagram ID, current ongoing course and year, college name and a photo of them along with the song in MP3 format through the google form.

Making the Post

Using Adobe Photoshop we designed a template for the post. Using Adobe After Effects and Adobe Premiere Pro, we made videos having the poster with a photo of the contestant and their song as audio.

Airing the songs

We started posting the video song after giving relevant captions and tagging the contestants. On the third day, IG warned about the high activity on our new IG account as over a hundred posts were uploaded within three days. Thus fearing a ban, we paused uploading for three days and resumed on the fourth. We completed uploading all entries by a week as we were undermanned.

Top 10

We were assisted by the Jesus Youth Kerala Music Ministry in the quality evaluation and helped us find out the top ten giving fifty-fifty weightage on both numbers of likes and quality. We released the poster of the top ten after four days from uploading. They were also asked to submit a new video of them singing for the final round by the next day and we uploaded their videos on the IG page of Jesus Youth Kerala Campus Ministry.

Final Results

Famous and well renown Music Director and Playback Singer, Alphones Joseph was our judge for the finals. He came live on the IG page of Jesus Youth Kerala Campus Ministry on the third day to address the audience and participants and to declare the results. He gave constructive criticism for each contestant and finally released the results of the top three. He also insisted to give special prizes for the remaining seven contestants as their performance were also remarkable. We gave the cash prizes to the winners and also special prizes to the remaining seven even though it broke our 5k pool prize.

Few tips for reference

  1. Google forms are the right choices for collecting entries from participants rather than WhatsApp or Gmail. It allows collaborating more members from different remote places to carry out the works.
  2. Rules and regulations are very crucial in a contest and it’s better to seek advice from others before formulating the rules. It’s good to check the posters and guidelines for similar events.
  3. A preferable input format of the file is important as audio, video and pictures have many different formats and would be difficult to work on different ones.
  4. Beware of the Instagram algorithm for sorting mature and immature account based on the number of likes and the number of posts that can be uploaded per day cause exceeding the limit may lead to a ban
