Many head to Miami to party, go to bars and pack the beaches, but there is so much more to southern Florida. Here I will detail some day trips in the area that can be done as a family, or solo to get away from the party scene and city life where you can take in the tropical air and spend time outside in solitude.

  1. Drive to the keys or key west — This trip is breathtaking, with open highways over the blue Atlantic, and many beaches and shops on various island keys. It takes about 3 ½ hours to get to Key West from Miami with no stops, but stops you’ll want! Check out Marathon Key, and Key Largo on the way, hit the white sands, and enjoy the tropical paradise before exploring Key West, having a nice meal, and heading back to Miami that night. No need to go all the way to Key West if time is of the essence though, spend the day exploring closer islands, and take in the sun!

2. The Everglades — West of Miami, a highway runs (Ingraham hwy.) through the everglades, an expansive area of swamp and protected conservation lands. here you can take in the vastness of the swamps and wetlands and even take tours by boat. There are many areas to hike and explore off the highway too like the Anhinga trail, with Flamingo beach at the far end of the highway (Florida’s southern tip), before the road turns around.

3. Naples — While a decent drive to the western side of Florida (2 hrs.), Naples has a “more pleasant”, homier feel than Miami, if you wanna get out of the lavish lifestyle for a day, go there and explore what the Gulf of Mexico has to offer. Visit the Naples Botanical gardens or Naples beach.

4. Bimini Island, Bahamas — For an overnight adventure, take the fast ferry to Bimini island around 40 miles off the Florida coast, this Bahamian island is an oasis and gives you the feeling of being in the open ocean on a Caribbean adventure, while only 40 miles from Miami. There is a large resort and many beaches to discover.

5. Biscayne National Park — Though only accessible by boat this national park has a series of islands large and small to explore, as well as a lighthouse and unique sea creatures and critters. Expanding north of Key Largo the park marks the northernmost Florida keys. You can even visit a museum and snorkel in a coral reef here!
