Vancouver, Canada Travel Guide
When thinking of the pacific northwest we think of the cities of Portland, and Seattle, but right across the Canadian border is Vancouver, BC. This large city of close to 700,000 is only 2 and a half hours from Seattle. Situated on the Strait of Georgia the city is nestled between a large bay of the pacific and mountains to the North and East. Similar to Denver, the mountains are a quick drive away and some of the world’s most scenic roads start from Vancouver. Here will detail spots to check out in the city, and drives that will leave you amazed.
- Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area — This park by a university will give you sprawling views of downtown Vancouver and miles of trails to enjoy. Though in an urban setting, the park lets you get away from the city and enjoy nature. There is also a sculpture here and a mountain biking course. (pic 1-parking area at mountain)
2. Burnet Marine Park- Right by Burnaby park, is Barnet marine park which sits on the water, again there are many trails and beaches along the inlet there. Views are spectacular with mountains rising along the water. It’s the perfect place for lunch or a walk at sunset!
3. Stanley Park — Unlike Burnet, this park is huge and almost sits on its own ‘island’ in the middle of the Burrard Inlet and Vancouver Harbour. Here there is a lighthouse and many trails and beaches. Even a small pond in the middle as well. An aquarium sits on the island too, and its a great place to spend a day exploring. Zeus beach on the western side is perfect for sunsets, and a paved path encompasses the entire park!
4. Queen Elizabeth Park — Located in an urban area south of downtown Vancouver, this park is perfect for an afternoon stroll. There are gardens, city views, and even a golf course. The magnificent looking Bloedel Conservatory marks the middle of the park.
5. Cypress Provincial Park- Located just half an hour from Vancouver, this mountain park includes hiking trails and a ski area. The views are expansive, with the city and towering mountains in view. Many mountains can be climbed here, including West Lion, a rigorous climb, which is one of the most prominent mountain peaks in the region.
6. Drive the Sea — to — Sky Highway — Starting in Vancouver, take BC — route 99 North, dubbed the sea to sky highway, this stretch will bring you by tall mountains, beautiful inlets/bays, and by pristine lakes and lookouts. For a day trip, drive the route the hour and a half to Whistler, BC (75 miles from Vancouver), and then turn back, but you’re welcome to keep going North as you wish, if time is not of the essence.
