Making and building from coast to coast

sushi erasers are a grade A #1 accessory

Last week, we held our first worldwide #JewelbotsBuild event, an all ages Jewelbots meetup where our community members could hack on Jewelbots together.

The idea was born after Nodebots NYC hosted Jewelbots Hack event last month, and we saw people create some really cool stuff for their Jewelbots including a lot of pull requests, a Power Rangers charm, a request for serial monitor, etc.

It was a lot of fun and we left dying to do it again, so we scheduled this one and called it #JewelbotsBuild. We thought it might be nice to be able to host some of our power users from the west coast, so we also invited people to join via Google Hangouts.

Our space sponsor, ClassPass has some incredible office space with an awesome A/V setup that allowed for remote builders to see and talk to us, and for us to see and talk to them. Which was awesome.

They also have amazing snacks, we’re talking Swedish Fish, La Croix (all of them), cereal, nuts, fruit, Soylent, soda. All the things.

Class pass has a world class snack dept

We had folks join us from all over the US and in person which made for a really fun group of builders.

Alice and Anita, first timers getting started

There were a bunch of things made, some first timers digging in for the first time. One person working turning her Jewelbots into a watch. My favorite hack to come out of the evening was an idea from Sumi, a long time Jewelbots ambassador.

She came up with the concept of a game that she called “Catch the Leprechaun”. The Jewelbots would light up different colors really fast and randomly. We paired at the event and got through getting the Jewelbots to turn on the colors we wanted it to cycle through.

Sumi showing off our code

Last night I finished the code live streaming on Twitch.tv (that’s another post all together, but suffice it to say it was fun and I’ll be doing it again next Tuesday night). The game is SUPER FUN, the code is here and a video of it is below.

SO FUN

We’ll be doing this again soon! To find out when sign up for our mailing list at http://Jewelbots.com. Stay coding!

What, you don’t have a video guy following you around the office? Weird.
