Steve the Magician and his eager assistant

Steve the Magician knows a lot about the magic of Camp. He also knows how to enchant a room full of children with a tap of the wand, some choice magic words, and faster-than-the-eye prestidigitation.

Last week, dozens of future campers caught his amazing act at the Bernikow JCC. The performance — starring a tame white dove named Bunny, unbelievable feats with a balloon and audience members plucked from the crowd — previewed Steve’s show this summer at the Lillian Schwartz Day Camp.

“What kind of pizza do pilots like?” he said, firing off a series of quick-witted jokes. “Plain!” he responded, smiling wide.

Future campers are captivated by the magic at the Bernikow JCC

Steve the Magician has shared his magic with campers at JCC Camp, every summer, for more than a decade.

He’s one of dozens of professional performers who educate, entertain, and inspire our campers of all ages from the stage of the outdoor amphitheater.

Steve the Magician making kids smile

“I love to see their smiles and make them laugh,” said Steve, a middle school teacher by day, whose own children, now adults, went to Camp at the J. “It’s the greatest. We have fun every year.”

Three-year-old Maddison French was certainly spellbound. She said she can’t wait for her first year as a K’Ton Ton camper, so she can see Steve the Magician again.

“He tricked us with his birdie!” she said with a giggle.

And what other magic is she looking forward to this summer at Camp? “Poolie! Ice Cream! Songs!!”
