One of the most important and effective ways we learn is through experience. Our experiences overtime shape who we are, how we think, and what standpoints we take on certain issues. Sometimes experiences can be manufactured through objects, and stories can be told through object narratives. Being in a space that reflects a perspective can really have a greater impact. It is less detached and we are forced to associate our ourselves with a space we are in.

Through the visit at the Tenement Museum I was able to become immersed in a story and envision it through someone else’s eyes. Even into a small glimpse, objects were set in a context that was narrated by a visual and experiential story that related to time and space and sensory connections. Much of our reaction and memories respond to spatial influence and by entering rooms with small key details that unraveled the story of people, it became clearer and easier to relate to. The story was enhanced by reference points that could be made throughout the experience.

Another element was how technology and digital device was incorporated into the space. It pushed visitors to engage with the materials and develop ties and connections to their own lives and those who lived in the building. The digital devices were also hidden and immersed in the materials so that visitors could learn while participating. Overall, it was a really unique and successful experience where everyone walked away with a better understanding and was able to access and engage with materials on a level platform.
