Storm King Enlists Artists to Engage Audiences

The Storm King Art Center spans hundreds of acres and includes both indoor and outdoor exhibit space. The inclusion of outdoor space makes the museum specifically sensitive to the rise of climate change issues and activism within recent years. The museum, literally, depends on the environment for their programming and audience outreach and engagement.

The center has a limited season in which special exhibitions are arranged around a certain topic. This year the exhibition, Indicators: Artists on Climate Change, was developed directly with artists who would create work that addressed the issue of climate change. Over twelve different artists share their work to address environmental, personal, and social repercussions of climate change in our society.

In keeping with museum practice, programming will be designed around the exhibition in order to engage school groups, families, and children in summer camps. The artists share their work with the center and the center then develops programming to provide audiences with resources to connect with the work and engage them in the issue of climate change.

Storm King was interested in providing timely exhibitions that would engage and educate audiences about current issues that affect society and provide ways to help their visitors engage the issue and be a part of a solution.
