At Jia, we’re all about empowering hardworking entrepreneurs around the world to realize their business ambitions. This mission has introduced us to countless communities of ambitious, savvy individuals; sari-sari stores in the Philippines especially embody this β€˜negosyante’ (business-minded) ambition.

Background: Sari-sari stores are a cultural phenomenon in the Philippines, fulfilling consumer demand for everyday, essential products while offering a communal social atmosphere. They cater to individuals buying items in small volumes rather than in bulk by selling products β€˜tingi’ (or per-piece) rather than on the per-pack basis of traditional retailers, enhancing cost-effectiveness for low-budget customers.

Operations: Sari-saris serve their immediate communities β€” these stores are small, neighborhood shops that often act as an extension of the owner’s house. Sari-sari stores are typically family enterprises that are, in many cases, owned and operated by mothers, who establish these businesses to supplement their family income.

Products: The name β€˜sari-sari’ originates from the Filipino word for variety, and indeed, sari-saris carry a diverse assortment of groceries and home essentials, including canned goods, coffee, shampoo, soy sauce, and other everyday items.

Pricing: Sari-sari businesses are often much more affordable than their convenience store counterparts, despite remaining slightly more expensive than supermarket offerings. This is primarily due to sari-saris sourcing their products from traditional grocers and then marking them up at around 1 to 2 pesos per item, allowing owners to obtain a modest profit margin.

Competition: Since the sari-sari industry is largely unregulated, neighbors are often in direct competition with each other; as such, owners commonly invest in entertainment, such as in-shop karaoke machines, or market the shop as an internet cafe to attract customers to their business. These strategies further highlight the ingenuity of Filipino entrepreneurs and their negosyante instincts.

Community: Sari-sari stores offer more than just convenience and affordability: they create communities within Filipino neighborhoods, building personal connections with customers and offering credit to trusted patrons. These stores are often the focal point of neighborhoods, fostering relationships between neighbors by serving as an indispensable part of daily routines.

By providing convenience, personalized service, and a sense of belonging, sari-sari stores hold a special place within Filipino communities. Jia is enabling sari-sari stores to continue providing essential goods to their communities by offering store owners access to affordable loans, educational resources, and opportunities for diversification. We’re proud to help ensure the longevity of these beloved establishments in Filipino neighborhoods.
