Our “plot” in life

We have a garden! (My editor says to never use exclamation marks but I think this deserves it.) Travis put us on a waiting list for a community garden about 1.5 miles from the house and three months later, we got in.

Last gardeners planted corn

My new favorite place

We started our adventure at what I think will be my new favorite, if not necessary, store — Farm Supply. So many plants and I want to buy them all. Since we have absolutely no clue where to start, we asked an employee and, man, gardeners really do like to share knowledge. She was gracious enough to share all her favorite products, techniques and even wrote down pricing for us. We left with a new shovel, gloves, and a rake because…

So much mulch

The last gardeners may have left some corn, but they also filled the plot with mulch, which we now have to dig out and throw away. Then we have to put in more nutrient rich soil, some kind of coconut byproduct (we’re CA residents now so we are automatically eco-friendly), and a fertilizer. When we received the guidelines for the garden, we knew we would have to think about bug control because the other gardeners are organic and concerned about chemicals and pesticides entering their area. Only we didn’t know how soon we would have to put some real thought into this.

The plot is an entire ant bed. It wasn’t until Travis felt them crawling on his feet that we realized. There are so many of them that the swarm looks just like dirt. After a couple of wheelbarrow trips to the garbage, we decided to call in a day and brainstorm some ant control. All ants must die (GOT reference).

Doesn’t anyone else work around here?

Neighbors

So the neighboring plot is LIT. Like onions, tomatoes, squash, peppers, elevated boxes, etc. It’s even decorated. Not only we do have to worry about getting the seeds into the ground, keeping a tidy plot and simply making sure the plants don’t die, we also have to make sure we’re not embarrassing Mr. Miracle-gro. Can you imagine him bringing his friends to show off his prize winning zucchini and passing the plot that used to grow shoe soles?

I seriously dug that out of the plot
(probably) prize winning zucchini

Visions of basil danced in my head

When we finally excavate our little land, we can determine which crops to plant depending on the time of year. We have hopes of tomatoes, peppers, onions and some type of greens — Swiss chard, kale. We definitely want to have a corner dedicated to herbs. #Goals to be those annoying people who tell you that what you’re eating came out of our garden.

So let’s see how this grows!
