Back in September 2016 when Apple introduced iPhone 7 to the world during its keynote, Apple showed a picture where in the end Tim Cook — Apple CEO — said the picture was taken directly from its iPhone 7 Plus and not any DSLR camera.

Trying not to sound like an Apple fanboy, I have to admit myself that whatever Tim Cook and team was telling on stage is indeed true. With iPhone 7 Plus, everyone is a photographer — not amateur but they can be considered the pro one. Let’s take a look at the photo results here.

Disclaimer: All photos below are taken from iPhone 7 Plus — unedited except giving my name tag on them. Just in case you don’t know, there’s no complicated settings on iPhone 7 Plus to take these pictures. It’s just the shutter button. Both photos, standard and portrait mode, are taken in 1 shot that produced both the standard and portrait mode results — there’s a setting for it (check below for details).

The Verdict

After looking at those pictures, what do you think? Do you think I’m a professional photographer? Well, I am not! I’m just a normal guy who doesn’t have photography knowledge and intentionally own an Apple 2016–2017 masterpiece: the iPhone 7 Plus. Check here for other things you can do with iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. Good job Apple and Tim Cook!

How to take photos with Portrait Mode

The steps is super simple :)

  1. Make sure you have iPhone 7 Plus
  2. Open the Camera, on top of the shutter button, find “Portrait”
  3. First time using it, it will tell you that it’s still in beta
  4. Follow the instruction which basically the picture must be taken from certain distance in order to create the bokeh effect alias “blur background”
  5. Tap that shutter button to take the picture

That’s it.

How to take photos and get both Standard and Portrait Mode

By default your iPhone 7 Plus will produce both image: standard and portrait mode. Just in case it doesn’t, here are the steps, again simple:

  1. Go to Settings > Photos & Camera
  2. Scroll down until you find “PORTRAIT MODE”
  3. Make sure “Keep Normal Photo” turned on

And that’s it!
