JMS 215 Social Media Storytelling

I would like to do my story about the Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera “Mexican Modernism” exhibit that is going to be at the Denver Art Museum. The exhibit is meant to serve as a visual representation for Mexican identity after the Mexican Revolution. It will include work from many Mexican artists. In the story, I think I will give some heavy background on Kahlo, Rivera, and other artists from textbooks so that it can be inclusive for all viewers. I think giving background information will educate as well as hopefully spark interest in people. I think I can interview people at the exhibit and possibly people who are there to view the exhibit and find out how or why Kahlo and Rivera have affected them. I think these people are important because they are the audience in which these artists wanted to reach. Hopefully, I will be able to speak with people who especially identify with Mexican culture in order to hear of the impacts on them. It will be interesting to see how these artists are still impacting today. I think it will be important to even talk to the person who decides that this is even going to be an exhibit. I would love to hear why the art museum thinks this is an important exhibit and what they hope to accomplish from it being there. I don’t have access to the actual artists obviously but I can possibly get in contact with the people who commissioned the art. I think this is an important story because art brings people together. I think everyone has different interpretations and art refuses to allow right or wrong. It is both. I think this exhibit exposes a minority group for its beauty. I think this exhibit will impose feminist ideas, not radically, but it will show the oppression and act as a voice for the underdogs. It is a piece of history. I think it would be neat to use Instagram as the platform of choice to both advertise for the exhibit and to show off different artwork pieces and what they mean. I think Instagram is best because it’s the most reliable platform for sharing images with people. I think even Kahlo or other artists would use Instagram nowadays to get their message across and share their paintings, or they would even go digital and become photographers had they access to social medias like we do now. I also think I have the most experience with Instagram. I think it could be cool to post paintings the museum uses, and in the bio of the photo, give background to the image and include interviews of what this piece meant for someone. I think large group of people will have interest in this especially if I can show off pieces and connect it to the issues we are facing today with prejudice against minority groups because we are very politically moved nowadays. We are also seeing that we are moving towards human acceptance with movements like BLM and I think this exhibit honors that idea. I would say that I come from a background of oppression which will allow me to remain humble while viewing the photos. I think my experiences in life so far make me empathetic to the artists which will allow me to convey the messages the exhibit is trying to send.
