Censorship & The Law
Censorship has always been an interesting topic. Its complexity causes lots of grey areas across social media. Personally, I view this topic from a logical standpoint and not an ethical one. Technically any forms of prior restraint are unconstitutional. In terms of media. I believe they have more freedom in that sense. However, for normal people like you and I, it can be easier to be censored. Many people like to complain that our amendment rights are taken away on platforms like Facebook or Youtube. If I were to go on youtube right now and try to find KKK related content I cant. This is because of the terms of service. If you agree to the terms of service on any platform, this means you have to abide by their rules. Legally speaking, these companies have the right to do so. In a way, you have to sign away all rights regarding censorship. The platform will always have more power. Normal people like us do not have a say on what they decide is okay. Censorship is also evolving. It will always be difficult to tell when a post seems “safe.” Outside of social media, we have the power to protest and be protected. Our online presence is another story. Against these corporations, we will remain powerless to their decisions.
