Getting Young People to Vote
Fewer than 1 in 5 young people cast their ballots for Super Tuesday in 2020.
There was a multitude of factors that played into this, but voter turnout in the United States has always been low, especially among young people. In 2016 the voter turnout for the presidential election sat at around 58%.
Voter turnout is at an all-time low and it is time to start treating voting as a responsibility. Getting people to vote starts in the months before November 3rd, so voter advocacy needs to start now.
In 2020 Colorado is not just voting to decide the new president of the United States, but there is a multitude of ballot measures that need to be voted on as well. Voters need to be educated on these topics, especially young voters.
College students have the power to vote but often don’t. Getting college students educated and excited about voting could mean a better voter turnout. Young voters need to realize that it’s incredibly easy to vote in Colorado, and that getting an absentee ballot is easy as well. Colorado has universal mail in ballots. Mail in ballots make it so that there is no excuse for not voting this year.
Get people educated and get them registered to vote is the goal here.
I would love to work with others who have the same topic of voter advocacy this year.
