The data is the diving results from the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, via source: Emerson & Meredith (2011). The file contains four events, three rounds, and each dive score, which was scored by seven judges, but the highest and lowest scores were removed. Depending on the event, a diver has five to six dives in each round, and these six dives determine who advances to the next round.

The visualization depicts the overall diving during the Olympic Games in 2000. The average score from seven judges is represented by the Z-axis. The X-axis is the four events, Men’s 3m springboard, Women’s 3m springboard, Men’s 10m platform, and Women’s 10m platform. The Y-axis is the difficulty of the dive. Viewers can check each dive score in the RShiny visualization (see above) by moving the mouse over the dots. In addition, I specialize the gold medalist in another color and size. Surprisingly, in the semi-finals, most dives chose a lower-difficulty performance to secure a high average score.
