President Trump announced that tariffs are a go on March 4th. What will Canada do?
Canada is the United States's number one trading partner. We import $2.5 billion in products from the South daily, and Canada buys more than China, France, Japan, and the United Kingdom combined. And yet, the Orange Man elected by (most) Americans decided to impose tariffs on us starting March 4th, which is tomorrow. Those are the same tariffs that President Trump proposed on February 1, 2025.
We, Canadians, are quite upset. And no, this time, we are not sorry.
How will the Canadian government respond to Trump’s tariffs? Well, first and foremost, the federal government plans to impose 25% counter-tariffs on $155 billion worth of products imported from the United States. But those measures were discussed in the first days of February. As I’m typing this on March 3rd, a day before Trump’s tariffs come into effect, there is an update from the provincial government.
