Culture is more important than mission. Without a healthy work culture, there are no people and with no people, there is no company!

There could be a great and growing product, strategy and vision to accomplish. But, when the work culture is toxic, there’s no other way than going down as a company. Even the very best of employees have quit companies where they couldn’t tolerate the work culture. Top priority for any company should be the culture and anything else comes next.

Let’s see some signs of toxic work culture below:

* No support or recognition for work

* Favouritism, inequity, dishonesty

* Micromanaging people and work

* No trust

* Weak morale at work

* Dominating/Restrictive bosses

* Strict rules and policies

* Insecurity at work

* No communication between management and employees

* Negative environment yet no one talks about it

* Secretive culture around

* Clock watchers and prefer times over work and its quality

* People can’t take decisions but only orders from senior management

No matter how many talented employees a company has, the company, products, project, everything fails at the end if a healthy work environment is not maintained. Even the best employees try to their best abilities to be in company and transform practices and processes. But if there is a roadblock in the senior management or leadership, there is nothing one can do but quit.

Leaders are key to ensure a workplace and the people in it are happy and enjoying what they do. Company is just a term on paper, but people are the ones who form a company. Employees should feel confident to speak up and express any concerns, issues or share their feedback regularly to the company. There should be 2-way communication for a company to sustain.

* Act on feedback. Feedback is of no use without execution!

* Focus on employee wellness through fun events and challenges.

* Trust your people yet maintain a sense of accountability.

* Invest in employees personal and professional growth.

* Support or assist them when needed.

* Create a sense in your employees that you care for them through constant feedback and execution loops.

* Ensure work life balance by encouraging work flexibility and work from home options when needed.

* Enable parents to work stress free by accommodating any parental needs.

* Be open, transparent and communicative.

* Be flexible and adaptive to changes.

It’s not just the management’s responsibility to ensure a happy workplace but every employee should contribute their part to create a healthy work environment that makes people wanting to come to work every day.

Being a culture first company yields positive results not just in terms of revenue but also best talent, brand awareness and happier work environment that people can celebrate.
