And I’m an Engineer at Medium.
How long have you been at Medium?
I’ve been working at Medium for three months.
Why did you join Medium?
I joined Medium because I believe that the world needs to be smarter. We need people to read more than a tweet at a time and we need a place where we can look at issues in long form.
What is your favorite part about working for Medium?
The company culture really promotes an awareness of self that I simply haven’t seen in any other workplace. There’s such curiosity about the technical stuff — that’s to be expected, but there’s also a deep curiosity about what makes a good person, what makes a kind person. Everywhere I turn I see people doing whatever they can in large and small ways to make the world a better place, and I love that.
What does your collaboration with Product/Design look like?
I’ve got a tight relationship with product and design, they give me reasonable approximations of what they want me to build and are always on hand to add clarity if something doesn’t look quite right. The feedback loop is tight and also allows me to move ahead with reasonable assumptions rather than be blocked.
What is your favorite Medium story and why?
Right now? Read This If You’re Not Sure You Want Kids by Kris Gage. I’ve appreciated a lot of her writing, but this particular article laid out a lot of really self reflective elements that could go into the decision to have or not have children.
What is something you’ve learned about yourself since joining Medium?
That I’m even less of an extrovert than I thought, and that’s ok, I’m still worthy.
