Joe Biden gave the closing speech at the Democratic National Convention, August 20th. Although this Convention was unique and virtual, Biden’s speech still managed to resonate with the American people.

The speech focused on why we need to vote Trump out while at the same time making the case for why we need to vote Biden in. The speech focused on the morality of America and the two directions we can choose to take in this election. Biden closed his speech stating, “May history be able to say that the end of this chapter of American darkness began here tonight as love and hope and light joined in the battle for the soul of the nation.”

Biden made it a point in his speech to speak to young people and the problems facing them. He stated [Biden] “one of the most powerful voices we hear in the country today is from our young people. They’re speaking to the inequity and injustice that has grown up in America. Economic injustice. Racial injustice. Environmental injustice,” Joe Biden stated in his speech. “I hear their voices and if you listen, you can hear them too. And whether it’s the existential threat posed by climate change, the daily fear of being gunned down in school, or the inability to get started in their first job, it will be the work of the next president to restore the promise of America to everyone,” Biden concluded in his remarks.

The racial unrest and Black Lives Matter movement have made a major impact on the discourse of race in American politics and will impact the election greatly. Joe Biden made it a major point to speak to the racial unrest and crisis facing the Country. Biden highlighted attention to the historic significance of racism in America: “History has thrust one more urgent task on us. Will we be the generation that finally wipes the stain of racism from our national character? I believe we’re up to it. I believe we’re ready.” He concluded the topic with a message of hope, “with passion and purpose, let us begin you and I together, one nation, under God united in our love for America and united in our love for each other. For love is more powerful than hate. Hope is more powerful than fear. Light is more powerful than dark. This is our moment. This is our mission.”

Joe Biden prioritized the importance of restoring unity in America in his televised speech. “I believe there is only one way forward. As a united America. United in our pursuit of a more perfect Union. United in our dreams of a better future for us and for our children. United in our determination to make the coming years bright,” Biden stated.

He [Biden] repeatedly phrased this election as a battle for light against darkness. “America’s history tells us that it has been in our darkest moments that we’ve made our greatest progress. That we’ve found the light. And in this dark moment, I believe we are poised to make great progress again. That we can find the light once more”, he [Biden] stated. Joe Biden managed to touch the hearts of the American people, to unite us to vote and to take a stand against darkness. As Joe Biden says time and time again, we are in a battle for the soul of our Nation. We must be on the right side of the battle.
