Civil is expanding its presence in Asia by supporting the growth of quality journalism outlets in the region.

As part of Civil’s commitment to engaging diverse, global communities across the globe, we’re partnering with Splice, a Singapore-based media organization that is committed to driving media transformation in Asia and is working with newsrooms to adapt to changes in the industry.

Today, Civil is pleased to announce its commitment to the Splice 100 initiative, which aims to catalyze the growth of 100 media startups in Asia over the next three years.

The Splice 100 program will begin in January 2019. Splice will spearhead efforts to provide media entrepreneurs up to $15,000 to take their ideas to prototype stage, and help them define their vision, strategy, operations and workflows.

Asia enjoys a booming economy, a digitally connected population, and massively underserved journalism markets that are traditionally shaped by politics, businesses and other interest groups. According to Alan Soon, CEO and co-founder of Splice, Splice 100 will provide media entrepreneurs an opportunity to innovate in an industry that’s both in dire need of a better media ecosystem and ripe for disruption. A partnership with Civil, he says, will expedite this mission.

“The media startup space in Asia is anemic, and we need diverse, credible startups to really transform journalism. Whether that’s with funding, or giving the right training about how to build a media startup, or leveraging our network to support this rapidly changing industry, our goal is to put Splice on track to help launch 100 media startups within the next three years.”

In addition, Splice will run the second publicly announced Asia-based Civil Newsroom (the first being Global Ground). This will allow Splice to plug into the growing Civil ecosystem and connect with its global network of newsrooms and partners for content sharing, collaboration and audience discovery.

“Splice produces some of the sharpest, most influential news industry analysis in Asia,” said Matthew Iles, CEO of The Civil Media Company. “The Civil community mission is to power independent journalism around the world, and in Splice we have found the perfect partner for catalyzing a future for news in the region built on trust, autonomy and collaboration.”
