From day one, HackCville was built for students by students. What started as a hacker house for students to work on personal projects has transformed into a local institution serving over 1,000 students each year interested in learning and making projects in a variety of areas.

Our unique leadership model is what makes that possible. After students complete their first course at HackCville, you’re given opportunities to join our leadership. Just a year after joining HackCville students can end up in a paid leadership role where they can shape the experience of future students.

Our program leads, trips managers, account managers, course directors, marketing team, program coordinators, and other leading roles are all held by students. We currently employ 30 student leaders each semester who continue their own learning by teaching others. Another 80 serve as volunteer project coordinators (too many to list here!).

We’re excited to introduce the Fall 2019 HackCville leadership team.

Our Student Directors

From left to right: Jessica Sommerville, Tucker Wilson, Lily Hungarland, Sydney Suarez, and Caky Winsett

Jessica Sommerville, Lily Hungarland, and Tucker Wilson are our Courses Directors. They train and manage our teaching staff for all 21 sections of Skills Courses that we offer this fall. All three are 4th years, studying everything from Computer Science to English. All three have taught courses at HackCville in previous semesters.

Sydney Suarez is our Marketing Director. She’s responsible for bringing in hundreds of new students through our doors each and every semester for all of our programs. Sydney is a rising 3rd year studying Anthropology and a HackCville Launch program graduate.

Caky Winsett is our Trips Director. She’s responsible for training and managing our Startup Trips staff. Her team brings 250+ students to visit startups and meet alumni in 5 cities each year. Last fall her team brought over 150 UVA students to NYC alone. Caky is a rising 4th year Media Studies major.

Our Managers and Program Leads

We have 30 student managers and program leads who make our programs happen. All of them have previously served in other volunteer coordinator roles in the past, or completed our Launch summer program with high marks. They come from across all different years and majors.
