What is the Internet Fundamentally?

Well there’s a question for you. I’ve been thinking about it a lot the past couple of days. I can’t even type without looking down at my hands, so I’m not sure how capable I am of answering this question. After much deliberation, the best I could come up with is a very limited metaphor.

The internet is like a big room; a closed off space, but so vast that it feels all encompassing. Contained within this room is almost every person on earth. Everyone’s naked and blindfolded. You stumble around in the dark, finding your way around by asking questions. Everyone else is in the same situation, so all anyone can gather from the situation is what everyone’s willing to contribute. In the end you find what you’re looking for as long as someone else knows about it too. Whether that be the answers to math problems, or opinions on books, or just naked people. There are a lot of naked people to find.
