6 Secrets to Building a Strong Ecommerce Empire

eCommerce Entrepreneur

As someone who has been called an eCommerce entrepreneur, I’ve had more than my fair share of experience building online enterprises, shaping underperforming start-ups and testing different techniques — some have worked while others have failed.

Building an online business takes more than anyone could possibly imagine. Yes, you have to put in the hard work and sweat your ass off.

Do you know the first thing you should do before even thinking of starting an eCommerce business? Well, it’s pretty simple. Ensure you have a clear vision and goals — and that you adhere to them. That’s it. That’s what you should do before setting up your online business.

Since I decided to dive into the entrepreneurial waters, I came to realize that entrepreneurs should ask themselves why and how of taking action. With that, I mean you should make it clear to yourself why you want to start the business and how you are going to start it. Once you answer those two questions, then you can proceed and learn which steps to take next.

To help you go through this process successfully, I have put together 6 secrets that you can easily implement. You can go ahead and use it as a reference or checklist to put you on the right track.

1. Test and execute every idea

Why waste a lot of money on ad campaigns that don’t bring any positive results? Failing to test an idea is the worst mistake that you can ever commit when setting up your online store. Why? Because you can’t tell if an idea is worth investing in when you haven’t taken your time to test and see if a given strategy or program is working.

Trust me, you can’t change what you don’t test or measure.

I often give my students the example of a doctor and a patient. There is a reason why doctors first test patients to get stats of their breathing, blood pressure, and heart rate. They can’t prescribe drugs or identify symptoms before they test the patients first. And the same should apply to your business.

2. Double Your Clientele

Starting an eCommerce business is one thing but expanding your client base is another thing altogether. After all, you will need more clients to make your eCommerce empire stronger.

Look at your clients as the backbone of your business. They are the reason why you decided to set up your online store. Well, now you know the importance of acquiring more customers. But how will you do that?

You can use a number of different strategies to acquire more customers but one thing I know for sure is that you can’t do that without links. Yes, links play a big part when it comes to growing your eCommerce empire.

Trust me; you will need links if you want Google to know that your page is relevant. Not just mere links, but relevant links. High-quality links are a vote of trust. And yes, they are the currency of the net.

So long as you are selling something that people want, then you are on the right path. Make it a priority to find communities where your best buyers hang out. These can be review sites, podcasts, forums, or websites.

Once you find the communities, then you can go ahead and build a good relationship with them. For example, you can approach a product review site and offer them your product to review. That way, you will have built a good relationship. In return, you will get relevant customers streaming to your store. And that’s how you acquire more customers. It sounds awesome. Isn’t it?

3. Learn As You Grow

You can’t know everything about eCommerce unless you start the business and learn new things as you grow. I would advise you not to try and figure out everything during your first days as an eCommerce entrepreneur.

You should focus on getting more customers. And you will only do that if you create room to learn about the market trends and what your customers really want.

A business is not considered a business when it has no customers. You must have customers. Whether it is one or they are a thousand. Learn to listen to your customers. Identify the things that make them want to come to your store again and again.

Learning as you grow is the best tactic that you can count on if you want to take your eCommerce business to the next level.

4. Deliver Beyond Your Customers’ Expectations

Your customer service game should be at its highest peak. Why? Because your customers can decide whether to come to your store or not depending on the type of customer service they receive. Hence, you should always put them first, no matter what comes along.

Wondering how you can do this? Well, just serve your customers as you would wish to be served. And it will be much better if you offer them high-quality service beyond their expectations. This way, you can be assured of loyal customers and even more referrals.

Well, you will agree with me that not every customer is always right. But when it comes to business, learn to listen to your customers. What do they want? What makes them happy? And what turns them away? These are very important questions that will help you up your customer service game.

You should welcome all opinions and respect everything that your customer has to say. I know this may sound irritating to some people but there is no other way to go about this. You have to learn to be your customers’ servant. Just treat them well, and your business will nourish faster than you thought.

5. Adapt quickly to industry changes

The eCommerce platform is constantly experiencing new changes as days go by. For example, you can find effective eCommerce software that works well for your business but a new one gets introduced into the market and outshines it.

The best way to stay ahead of your competitor and stay relevant in your business is when you find it easy to adapt to changes in the industry. Just like I said earlier, the eCommerce industry is constantly evolving and you can’t afford to stay rigid. You have to learn to be flexible.

Want to know the best way to stay ahead of your competitors and make your business strong ever? Do this; predict and stay ahead of change to maintain your position as a leader — ahead of your competitors.

6. Embrace Social Media

And just before I wind up — don’t underestimate the power of social media. I always tell my students that my best tip for growing any eCommerce business is genuinely engaging my customers, and prospective customers, through social media.

Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and Twitter have been a major game changer for all my eCommerce businesses. And you know what? If I can do it, then you can do it even better.

In Conclusion

The most important thing is to believe in yourself and put your customers’ needs first. This way, you will have fewer obstacles to encounter throughout your journey as an eCommerce entrepreneur.
