So I am officially in Cape Town, woke up this morning at 8AM which I guess is about 12 AM MDT. The journey started on 8/21 the day of the eclipse. After flying into Denver the day before I spent the night on a friends couch. I got to the airport via light rail and made it just in time for the eclipse. As it started I ran through security because there was no line, and got to see the ending of it near my gate. The flight from Denver to Minneapolis was short and fast. I had a 3-hour layover in Minnesota where I proceeded to drink a Beer and crank out emails.

My flight to Amsterdam left Minneapolis at about 7PM and arrived in Amsterdam the next morning at 11 am. It was an eight-hour flight the airplane food wasn’t even that bad. I got to sit next to a great family from Holland who had some great advice for me on where to go during my stay.

When I arrive I surprisingly made it through customs with no issue. And after spending an hour figuring out how to exchange currency finally found an uber to central Amsterdam. I proceeded to spend the rest of the day walking lost through the city. I found my way to Dam Square where I found a nice place to get coffee, and free Wifi.

I soon found out that coffeeshops in Amsterdam do not mean the same thing that they do in the states. For anyone that doesn’t know there isn’t much that is illegal in Amsterdam, in fact Bars are called Cafes and Coffeeshop is the name for places that sell marijuana. I got to walk through the Red Lights District and was amazed at everything that was going on that was apparently completely normal and somehow Legal. I ate dinner at a spot next to one of the canals, before heading back to my AirBnB. The place I stayed was quant and after spending 20 minutes ringing the wrong doorbell easy to find.

The next morning I left for the airport at 7AM and arrived early to my flight, the airport in Amsterdam is freaking huge by the way. I got a ham and cheese croissant as I charged my computer, and found a couple cool shops to go to in near my terminal. I got on a plane with I swear a thousand-other people and got ready to go to Cape Town. I spent the entire day Wednesday 8/23 on a plane. My computer battery only lasted about 2 hours before I had to resort to inflight movies. Among which I watched J Edgar, The Wolverine, and Wolf of Wallstreet. On the plane we ate chicken and rice, pizza and a very small grilled cheese sandwich. I was excited to have some South African wine t pair with my meals, and so was the South African gentlemen sitting with me on the plane.

We finally arrived after an 11hour flight, and I fortunately was not missing any luggage. The van that took me to my house also carried 4 kids from Holland who where staying in Cape Town for the next few months as well. I finally got to my home, and unpacked a little bit, got to meet some of the housemates and passed the fuck out.

8 hours later here I am sitting in the living room. I went to a local coffee shop for some breakfast and an espresso for about 7$ I was able to get a gigantic breakfast and a lot of caffeine. I get to spend the rest of today n orientation and hopefully get some barring on where I am. I am really excited to be here and even more excited for the next 10 weeks to come.
