Tuscany is a vast and beautiful region of Italy. It is one of the greatest possible destinations in all of Europe, especially for the athletic and the young at heart. For anyone who craves Italian countryside, this is the place to go.

At 22,985 square km, the land consists of mountains, caves, waterfalls, forests, ancient cities and many vast fields with exotic flowers, mushrooms and truffles. A primary food source is the land itself. Farmers provide much of what is put on the table.

Biking is big there. Cyclists will find several areas accessible if they put the work in, and of course they will. The ride is that rewarding. There are many trails there, some that extend for dozens of miles, which could provide a nice challenge for avid cyclists.

Another recreational option is a walk in the woods. Traveler and writer Laura Holt recommends going by way of an all-terrain cart. “An all-terrain cart makes a trek through the Casentinesi Forests National Park — one of Europe’s largest woodlands — a walk in the park.”

Tuscany also features the 3,000 year-old crumbling city of Populonia. It is an ancient Etruscan city that rests just above the sea with an incredible view.

How does one get to Tuscany? Several airlines fly directly from Pisa to Florence, the capital of Tuscany. Busses also make the drive and run on a regular schedule.

Once you’re there you can fly, or fall with style. Paragliding, helicopter rides, and balloon rides offer an aerial view of the mountains and landscape. The bold visitors can even try skydiving 14,000 above the country.

Tuscany is a must-see for anyone who gets a lucky visit. However, if you’re thinking of renting a place there don’t bother. Houses are passed down from generation to generation. There’s really nothing available.
