If you’re someone who doesn’t enjoy running, it can be hard to get yourself to go for a jog. However, there are plenty of good reasons to start liking running! Running is a great way to get exercise, relieve stress, and explore the outdoors. And, once you get into the habit of running, you might be surprised at how much you enjoy it!

Running itself can seem so daunting. But I promise, it’s not as bad as it seems!

To help you get over your fear of running, we’ve put together five tips that will make running seem more attainable. Remember, running is for everyone, no matter the pace, distance, and fitness level you are at currently.

This will make your run more enjoyable and help you ease into the habit of running. I suggest starting on a flat surface for your first few sessions, like a flat trail or a track. Once you get more comfortable with running, you can start to experiment with different routes and terrains.

Start slow. It’s important to start slow when you’re first starting out and to build up your mileage gradually. Running can be tough on your body, so it’s important to give yourself time to adjust. Try running for a minute or two and then walking for a minute or two. Repeat this cycle for 20–30 minutes. Gradually increase the amount of time you’re running until you’re able to run for most of your workout. As you get more comfortable with running, you can start to increase your mileage and run for longer periods of time.

Get the right gear. Having the proper equipment can make a big difference in how much you enjoy running. This doesn’t mean you need to go out and buy the most expensive shoes and clothes. But having a few key pieces of gear can make a big difference in how comfortable you are while running. You might also want to invest in some other gear like a fitness tracker or a water bottle with a built-in filter.

I suggest starting with two-three times per week. Then, each time you run, try to beat your previous distance or time. This will give you something to strive for and help you see progress over time. Having a set exercise schedule is so beneficial for both your physical and mental health!

Find a running buddy. It’s always more fun to exercise with a friend! Find someone who is also interested in running and make plans to run together. One of the best ways to stick with running is to find a friend or family member who also wants to start running. This way, you can encourage each other along the way.

Having someone to chat with will make the time fly by and you’ll be more likely to stick with your running habit if you have someone to hold you accountable.

Having a positive social support system is crucial when trying to change any habit. If you don’t have a friend or family member in mind, find a running group! There’s strength in numbers. If you’re having trouble getting motivated to run on your own, find a local running group to join. Most cities have running groups of all different levels, so you can find one that’s just right for you. And, if you’re ever feeling low on motivation, just remember that there are other people out there who feel the same way! Running can be a great way to meet new people and make friends. It’s also a great way to explore your city or town. If you’re looking for a social activity that’s also good for your health, running is a great option.

Curate a solid running playlist. Nothing beats running to music! Make a playlist of your favorite songs to help you get pumped up for your run. I like to create different playlists for different running speeds. For example, I’ll have one playlist for when I’m running at a slow, easy pace and another for when I’m running at a faster, more intense pace. I even have set running playlists for race day.

Listening to music can help you forget how hard you’re working and make the time go by more quickly. It can also inspire you to push yourself harder and run further than you thought you could.

Invest in a foam roller. A foam roller is a great way to relieve muscle soreness after a run. It can also help improve your flexibility and range of motion. I like to use my foam roller before and after runs to help keep my muscles loose and prevent injuries.

Set goals. Having goals to work towards will help you stay motivated to run. Set small, attainable goals at first, like running for 20 minutes three times per week. As you accomplish more goals, you’ll be inspired to keep going and might even surprise yourself with how much you enjoy running!

There are a few things you should avoid eating before running, like foods that are greasy or fatty. These foods can make you feel sluggish and slow you down, not to mention even a little nauseous. Instead, opt for something light and easy to digest, like a banana or a small handful of nuts.

After your run, it’s important to refuel your body with some protein and carbs. This will help your muscles repair and rebuild. A simple post-run snack could be a hard-boiled egg or a bowl of oatmeal with some fruit.

Eating the right foods before and after your run is essential to improve your performance and recovery.

Have fun and don’t take yourself too seriously! Running can be a lot of fun if you let it be. Make sure to enjoy the process and be grateful for the gift of movement. Try running in different locations or when you are visiting a new city. Some of my favorite vacation memories occur when I have sent a morning or afternoon exploring a new location by foot.

Not interested in running solo? Run or walk with a friend and catch up while you get your miles in. Remember, there’s no wrong way to run, even if that means walking for a majority of the time. As long as you’re enjoying yourself and getting some exercise, you’re doing it right!
