What’s your philosophy?

Hi all,

The time since our last Journal Club (sorry!) has been one of great change for the whole division and the services within. The decisions we have made as we have changed what we do have been underpinned by philosophies (not too grand a word!) — divisionally, at service level and personally. But what are these philosophies and why are they important to what we do?

Emily Ford’s 2012 article, WHAT DO WE DO AND WHY DO WE DO IT? explores these questions in relation to librarianship and whether a unified, underlying philosophy exists. I think that we can apply this thinking to ourselves, whether as librarians or learning developers, or as the odd mix that most of us seem to be. Apologies to Sam and anyone who attended her journal club session at this year’s Norther Collaboration conference, where this papers was discussed. I think that the ideas are really relevant to us at the moment and might allow us a moment to reflect on what we have done this semester and what we want to achieve.

So whether it’s accessibility or openness, putting the customer first or staff wellbeing (and the myriad of complementary and competing combinations), I’d like us to think about what we do and why we do it — as a division, at service level and personally.
