Tired of your daily caffeine fix from coffee? Perhaps it’s time to consider a more tranquil alternative — tea. If you ever find yourself in the southern part of Japan, particularly on Kyushu Island, make it a point to visit Beppu, a renowned onsen town cherished by the locals. Just a stone’s throw from one of the oldest and most celebrated hot springs, Takegawara Onsen in Beppu City, a delightful aroma of brewing tea beckons you towards a small, unassuming tea shop known as ふく茶 (pronounced Fukucha).

A Warm Welcome Awaits

Stepping through the rustic blue door of Fukucha, you’re instantly enveloped in a warm and comforting ambiance reminiscent of your grandmother’s cozy abode. Despite its minimalistic design, the café exudes an air of tradition. It boasts an open bar seating arrangement with a low-level serving kitchen, creating an intimate setting that accommodates just six patrons at a time. The air is filled with the fragrant essence of freshly brewed tea leaves, embracing you in comfort. As you settle into your seat, Saya-san, the heart and soul of Fukucha, greets you with a genuine smile. She is both the owner and the master tea brewer of this charming tea haven.

Inside Fukucha

The Person Behind Fukucha

Saya-san, a warm-hearted woman in her sixties from the neighboring city of Nakatsu, Oita, is just one sweet lady who is passionate about tea brewing. After retiring from her 9-to-5 job nearly five years ago, her passion for tea brewing and her love for connecting with people led her to establish this cozy tea shop. Habitués are often treated to サービス (service), a term synonymous with freebies. Whether you visit alone or with friends, Saya-san’s genuine sincerity and unwavering dedication shine through in every cup of tea and every heartfelt conversation. It’s this authenticity that keeps patrons coming back for more, making Fukucha a sanctuary for the soul.
