Why You Should Watch “The Great” Series

Absurd Comedy, Thriller, and Drama All In One

As I am running away from all my grading and writing deadlines in the holiday season, I have binge-watched Season 1 of “The Great”.

I had very high expectations for “The Great” because it was written by Tony McNamara, who has also written “The Favourite” black comedy film. I still remember how different and unexpected ‘The Favourite’ has felt with its bizarre twists, insane artsiness, and annoying soundtrack:

The Great is ‘an occasionally true story’ streaming on Hulu where an Austrian bride, Catherine (Elle Fanning) marries Russia’s new emperor Peter (Nicholas Hoult) and decides to take matters into her own hands by plotting a coup.

The Great is a court drama, a black comedy, a historical thriller, and an absurdity fest all at the same time.

The Russian court is full of intrigue and power games. indulgence and vanity, as well as horrifying brutality. Almost all of the characters are weird, back-stabbing, and full of flaws. Everyone is…
