Let’s remember when Fred Couples won the Masters, on this day in 1992 (April 12)
Fred Couples is the most well-known golfer to come out the Seattle area. He has won one major tournament in his distinguished career (that has included being the #1 player in the world and winning over 60 tournaments), and it happened 27 years ago today.
The Masters tournament, held every year in Augusta, Georgia, is considered to be the most prestigious tournament in professional golf.
As sportswriter Rick Reilly* put it at the time:
Couples is now the most dominant phenom since Johnny Miller in the early 1970s, and the proof was evident at Augusta. Watson once said great players “learn that they don’t need to play their best golf to win. They only need to shoot the lowest score.” That was Couples’s week: His floor was the field’s ceiling.
