The Mariners ended their very first regular season home game — 42 years ago today — with a 7–0 loss to the Angels. That would be routine and it would soon be realized that being a Mariners fan became synonymous with disappointment. Maybe this year they’ll be good! Maybe, but showing optimism for this team will likely lead to more disappointment.

HistoryLink notes the details:

Attendance in the Kingdome was 57,762. The Mariners’ starting pitcher was Diego Segui who was a member of the Seattle Pilots club in 1969. The first batter was Dave Collins and the first hit was by Jose Baez.

The Ms got their first run (Dave Collins) and their first win on April 8, 1977, with a score of 7–6 against the Angels. The Mariners ended the year with a 64 and 98 record.
