Going into the 2005 NFL season, the Seahawks (and their fans) had a lot of reason for optimism, more so than at any prior point in team history. They had a solid team built around QB Matt Hasselbeck and RB Shaun Alexander (who was the MVP that year), two legendary offensive lineman (Walter Jones and Steve Hutchison) and the defense led the NFL in sacks. It was a team that had seven Pro Bowler and four All Pros. Plus, head coach Mike Holmgren has been to (and won) a previous Super Bowl with the Packers.

The Seahawks had a dominant team throughout the regular season, finishing 13–3 and winning their conference for the first time.

To get to their first-ever Super Bowl, the Hawks had to get past the Carolina Panthers, who were a wild card team that made it to the championship game. Seattle won handily, beating Carolina 34–14, and qualifying for Super Bowl XL.

One more thing: Journal of Precipitation is a new, Seattle-area arts and/or culture website that is dedicated to exploring the Pacific Northwest outside of the “usual places” and the cultural zeitgeist. We believe in compensating all of our contributors (even though it is probably modest, compared to larger websites and magazines). If you value what we’re doing, please consider contributing to our Patreon, and allow us to continue to grow and provide coverage of our community.
