The Journal of Precipitation v. 2.0, coming January 2018
For the past eleven or twelve years, I’ve been a blogger on and off, based on what I’ve been interested in and what my schedule allows for. I’ve always missed running a website, and want to give it one last shot in 2018. With the infuriating shuttering of DNAinfo and Gothamist, I thought I’d try my hand at making a local news and culture website that is relevant to my community but not beholden to the whims of a rich guy that can pull funding any time that the content he finances conflicts with his own business interests.
In early 2018, I’m launching a new version of the Journal of Precipitation, an update of my short-lived blog from a few years ago that went away when my schedule and commitments made running a low-readership blog enormously taxing.
Journal of Precipitation v. 2.0 is, I’m hoping, going to be a combination of a daily blog, monthly magazine, and an occasional newsletter with stories often surrounding a theme (issue one is focused on resisting Trump in 2018, issue two is tentatively dedicated to Northwest sports). The site will run in-depth interviews with some of the Northwest’s most interesting and/or talented people, profiles of individuals that might not be on everyone’s radars, plus I have a few other ideas for regular features.
To keep the site running and solvent, I’m launching a Patreon to hopefully attract a few collaborators and offset some of the expenses (internet costs, transcription fees, etc…). I’ve always assumed all of the costs out-of-pocket with my blogs, but here I’m hoping to minimize those while putting out a site worth reading. For Patrons, I’m planning on running contests regularly for events, books, and other items and experiences, as a supplement to the website. I want people to get something more out of this than one more website to read and am hopeful we can create something that is worthwhile to readers and patrons. There will be much more to come, but I wanted to get this down and posted to get started on working on it.
