3 Ways Technology Has Shaped The Newsroom
By Marsha Green
Some people believe that journalism is dying. Whether it is for financial reasons, not being credible, or lack of inspiration, there has been a disconnect to journalism and its audience. There may be some new innovations that newsrooms look to incorporate to keep the journalism field relevant.
In 2018 we have technologically come so far. From social media to drones, to artificial intelligence. Collectively, the world has partaken in highly advanced tech movements. Newsrooms are now using technology in more ways than one, and it’s working.
There are three major ways that technology helps shape the newsroom of tomorrow; Speed, Efficiency, and Collaboration.
Speed: Newsrooms are moving at a much faster pace. Producing and getting out news to the public, quickly. Now with news accessible at our fingertips, people are finding ways to access news stories almost immediately. This has been a major improvement in newsrooms. Not only for news to get to the masses, but feedback being given back to newsrooms. There is constant communication due to the fact that newsrooms are using technology to be fast.
Efficiency: Technology in the newsroom has made news writing more efficient. One major reason for that is the reduction of clutter. Without paper, things become more organized. Not only are things organized but they are produced with clarity and precision.
Collaboration: In the newsroom, technology has allowed a platform for different newsrooms to work together in many different ways. Whether that is checking sources with each other, or journalists in NYC and London having a meeting together. Technology has found its way into the newsroom to help propel the foundation of “working together.”
To some, journalism may not be everlasting, but many newsrooms worldwide are finding effective ways to not only produce news, but to produce; speedy, efficient, and collaborative projects. And it’s working.
