The future of journalism in a world of AI
By Somayya Safa
We live in a world that’s constantly changing and re-inventing itself. With each passing decade, we are introduced with new challenges that forces change.
Change plays an impact on the traditional drivers of a profession that had more of a purpose to strive at the beginning of its time. Now it’s being questioned as to what could be done of what once was the strive of these outcomes, and how could what we are facing in our society today especially with the rise of the internet and social media platforms impact the future that’s causing so much conflict and negativity towards, traditional media and journalism.
Although times are changing it is questioning the norm, and the purpose of our surroundings predicting what the future might bring.
The future is technology.
We are shifting to a time, where our worlds will be dominated by robots and artificial intelligence. It’s going to eliminate and impact human interactions and their professions where people are replaced by robots.
With how technology is advancing at a rapid speed of life anything is possible and expected. I wouldn’t be surprised if at one point in our lives where we thought that the impossible is actually now possible, because, anything is expected in a world that is dominated by technological advancement.
There’s no doubt that with these new advancements in technology and the role of the internet is playing a major role in the shift of the many changes and concerns that are changing the concept of professions and its traditions.
But we live in an era that forces such changes.
This is making us question the future and the possibilities that are needed to be addressed in order to re-evaluate and re-learn, how to adapt to these constant changes that are replacing the tradition of a profession with new advancement in technology.
There are skills that need to be looked at to further our knowledge into the depth of the reality we live in.
So how will the future of journalism look like in a world of robots and artificial intelligence in order to help fight against fake news in journalism or as a profession in general?
We are headed towards a future of advanced robots and artificial intelligence.
But artificial intelligence has been around us and its nothing new, it’s used through our smartphones — for example, Siri, where it listens to us and helps us determine what we want towards giving us an answer about anything we ask or say.
Artificial intelligence reassures that it’s going to make our lives better in ways that we can never imagine and that it will not eliminate human nor threaten their professions in journalism, but if anything it will help journalism to further expand their skills in journalism with the advancement of technology with the help of artificial intelligence.
Some news media like the Associated Press and Facebook have already been evolving and using AI to their advantage by being ahead of their professions by eliminating fake news through the software through patterns recognition.
According to an article on Techmergence by Corina Edwards, states that “AI does have a place in the newsroom for helping to save time and money and increase speed and efficiency to help human journalists keep up with the ever-expanding scale of global news media”.
