Our first video: People’War Against Smog, 2017

The last day of 2016, Beijing, China, new year and Spring Festival was coming.

When people around the world celebrated New Year’s Eve in various ways, millions of the citizens in northern China were suffering under smothering smog.

On January 1, 2017, Beijing’s PM 2.5 index broke through 500, and the average air quality index went beyond detection limit. In the past decade, China’s air quality has worsened severely year by year. Smog keeps coming back and haunts Chinese people. To suffer, or to fight back? Why it is so hard to get rid of smog, and what choices would Chinese people make to fight against it?

With these questions, as a student of MPA grogram, as well as a business news lead writer of www.jiemian.com in New York City, I built a team of three members in NYC and we produced our first social media video: People’s War Against Smog.

At the same time, in NYC, s also faced the new challenge.January 20, 2017, Donald Trump became the 45th and current President of the United States. After half year, June1, 2017, United States withdrawal from the Paris Agreement 2017.

Under this circumstance, with my expertise and experience both in media and public administration fields, I realized that social media video can be the most powerful tool to empower young generation both in Beijing and New York City to get involve in social innovation and environmental protection, which is the most urgent problem nowadays among other public issues.

Online videos account for 74% of all online traffic and 55% of people watch videos online every day in the U.S. Social media also opens a window for local citizens to be more involved and play a role in community in China. If without social media like Wechat, Weibo, the public would never have a change to know about the U.S. Embassy air pollution index.

Let’s look at some data:

One-third of online activity is spent watching video.

The 25–34 (millennial) age group watches the most online videos.

92 percent of mobile video viewers share videos with others.

Half of Beijing and Shanghai residents can be considered middle class.

Chinese social media users reached 28.8 million last year.

This is the most dangerous time both in China and the U.S. We have to reunite our community as soon as possible. If we do not use social media, “they” will use it. Fake news stories shared on social media affected the outcome of the presidency election and threat democracy in the U.S. Not to mention social media spreads terrorism and propaganda all over the world.
