Join us this year to lead workshops, host office hours, and help counsel independent journalism entrepreneurs while continuing to pursue your own projects

Creators draw inspiration from other creators. That’s why we’re excited to invite applications for new Creators in Residence to join our Entrepreneurial Journalism community at CUNY’s Newmark Graduate School of Journalism. This role is made possible with the support of the Facebook Journalism Project. We welcome your candidacy or referral.

Creators in Residence will support journalism entrepreneurs

Our Entrepreneurial Journalism Creators Program serves journalists developing new local and niche sites, newsletters, and podcasts. Here’s why we believe in planting seeds for a new era. Since last October, our new 100-day online program has provided a boost to these 40 independent journalists from 17 countries. They’ve published summary reflections on their progress.

The new Creators in Residence will support journalists like these recent program participants as they develop new news products, reach new audiences, and experiment with new revenue streams.

We’re growing 🪴

This coming year, we aim to serve 100 more journalists. The application for our fall Journalism Creators Program is open. Many of those who join us build local and niche media outlets to serve underrepresented communities. We’re committed to helping strengthen the community of independent journalism entrepreneurs. Day by day. Person by person. Cohort by cohort. Creators in Residence will help us achieve that objective.

Creators in Residence will serve our community in at least five ways:

Lead by example 🎨

Our Creators in Residence will show and share their work. They’ll open up their entrepreneurial process for our community to learn from.

Seeing people developing their own creative projects is more impactful than considering entrepreneurship theoretically. We’ll observe the circuitous entrepreneurial path, including experiments, setbacks, and breakthroughs.

Teach workshops 👩‍🏫

Our Creators in Residence will lead skill-focused workshops.

Developing a new journalism venture requires exercising a number of skills, plus passion and perseverance. Creators in Residence will lead workshops in their areas of expertise, from new product experiments to marketing, community engagement, and new revenue strategies.

Answer questions 🧑‍💻

Our Creators in Residence will host office hours and share input with those facing challenging decisions on their creative journey.

Our programming includes three core elements: coaching, cohorts, and community. These are among the biggest factors differentiating what we do from what others do. YouTube videos or MOOCs — Massively Open Online Courses — can’t offer that level of interaction. Our Creators in Residence will be part of that personal attention.

Host events 🎤

Our Creators in Residence will help us convene gatherings to reflect on common challenges and solutions and to share specifics about what’s working.

Gatherings are valuable in building community. Founders can discuss what to build, how to build it, and how to foster loyalty. They can collaboratively consider how to reach new readers, listeners and viewers.

We’ll share more soon about an online event we’ll host this fall to bring together creators and potential creators to talk about new revenue opportunities for niche local sites and newsletters.

Craft case studies 📈

We’ll work with our Creators in Residence to create new case studies.

These won’t be 50-page position papers. They’ll be short, easy-to-read, easy-to-learn-from guides to sum up the most useful takeaways from the growth of specific new ventures.

We’ll share these as free, open resources, available to all, for learning or teaching. And our Creators in Residence will share supplemental ideas and learnings as open posts.

We love learning from — and teaching about — the real-world journeys of people who have built new journalism ventures. This case study effort is one way we can augment the teaching resources available in this still-young domain of Entrepreneurial Journalism. In the interim, I’ve shared some past teaching and learning resources in a free, open repository at Journalism2030.com.
