Science and journalism are not having their best moment. Fake news, lies, and conspiracy theories against climate change all, at the same time, are only driving us to a critical path: the destruction of our planet. As Neil deGrasse Tyson says in the following video, “In this, the 21st century, when it comes to make decisions about science, people have lost the ability to judge what is true and what is not, what is reliable, and what is not reliable, what you believe and what you do not believe. And when you have people who don’t know much about science standing in denial of it and raising into power, that is a recipe for the complete dismantling of our informed democracy.”

So, please let me start this article with one simple question: how many planets do we have? Climate change is real. And it is based on real facts. The truth is indubitable at this stage, and we as humanity have already begun to live its consequences. Air pollution, respiratory diseases, extreme weather events, extinct species. And, yes, public policies against science from the country that pollutes the most per capita in the world.

What are we waiting for? There is no Plan B. The solution is not the inexhaustible search for new planets. That’s a risky plan. Earth, our only house, is perfect and beautiful yet. And, yes, climate change is caused by human behavior , so it is our responsibility to solve this problem.

That’s why we created #WeAreClimate. We started this community, to empower you, to help you learn more about this problem, and to find the solutions that best suit you for climate change through real, fact-checked journalism.

In this, the second month of life of WeAreClimate.com the feedback has been fantastic. We are growing every day as a solid, aware and committed community. And the questions started to arrive for this product created as part of the Tow-knight Entrepreneurial Journalism Program at CUNY.

Our weekly newsletter readers are more aware and concerned, and some of them have started to take action. That is the only solution for us to save our planet. To be together, united, and working untiringly looking for environmental options, through pressure to big corporations to change their policies.

That’s why we decided as a second step, to create a media platform that will soon be online. We’ll be creating not only a channel to educate and bring you inspiration for climate change, but we’ll be also become a green community. We’ll be creating this space especially for you to share your actions, thoughts and how you are fighting.

What are your environmentally friendly actions?

INNOVATION

As a Tow-Knight Entrepreneurial Journalism Fellow I have learned to listen to my community, to work for them, and to use all the available digital tools to inform them with accurate information, through multiple channels.

So we listened. And we understood that our community needs to feel hope, to understand the climate change issue, and to do something about it. We can also realize that they need to have access to engaging stories to really feel involved.

How are we solving it? We just launched our Instagram channel, with daily stories and a weekly live appointment where we share the news of the week. The most important action for We Are Climate as a different way to communicate through all its channels? Sharing 1 minute videos with those inspiring stories you’ve been looking for.
