For the past five years, I would turn on the television each night at 11 o’clock and watch Ashley Brewer on ABC7 Eyewitness News. Not only is she a USC student-athlete alum, but I have always admired her reporting style, relatability, knowledge of all sports, and cross-platform presence. As an aspiring journalist, I modeled myself to be like her. It wasn’t until recently that Brewer left kABC and pursue her dream of working in Connecticut at ESPN headquarters. There, she runs the sports rundown on the new platform, Quibi.

As a journalist, “branding” is essential. While an audience is consuming whatever a journalist says while they’re on air, they are also focusing on body language, look, and outside media platforms. In a society like this, there’s always someone watching. Ashley Brewer does an excellent job branding herself, establishing her uniqueness, and showing her love for journalism.

Brewer’s Instagram offers the perfect balance between journalism and personal life. She is young, stylish, loves to cook, spend time with family, and of course, report on sports. All of this is portrayed on her Instagram. Since Instagram is more of a personal platform, her saved stories cover “style”, “cooking”, “celebrities” “travel”, etc. She has partnerships with popular clothing lines including Revolve, so she tags them whenever she posts. Just based off her last six in-feed posts, it offers the perfect array of “news personality” and “young, trendy girl living her best life”. Three of her last six photos show her hard at work, one of them featuring Kobe Bryant. I often tune into her IG Live Streams, where she does Q&A. One time, she even answered my question!

If I were trying to get the more professional, reporter side of Brewer, I would automatically head to Twitter. Ashley’s twitter is filled with play-by-play updates, and also hilarious memes (The Office, White Chicks GIFs) that all relate to the sports world. As an ESPN junkie, this is exactly what I want to see. She adds emotion where it needs to be added, but also uses her youthful side to connect with younger generations. While I’ve never met her personally, her feed makes me want to be friends with her! It’s relatable and relevant.

On Quibi, Brewer is a co-star on the ESPN hit “The Replay”. The mini-series hasn’t reached its full potential because they have been forced to film at home due to COVID, but Brewer still makes her mark. Brewer replays some of the best sports moments and uses her expertise to give great feedback.

For Brewer, her next step could possibly be launching a YouTube channel. Her content is fills pages on YouTube, but it comes from news outlets rather than herself. Personally, I think Brewer could feature all aspects of her life: reporting, fashion, food, and family by doing vlogs, Q&A’s and “a day in the life” videos. Because she knows how to brand herself, this would be a could way to monetize and get an even bigger following. Ultimately, Brewer does a great job of representing herself as a reporter, but also a friend.
