Have you ever wondered why people’s personalities are so different from one another? The answer is not simple.

It took someone like Carl Jung (1875–1961), the renowned Swiss psychologist and psychoanalyst, a lifetime of studying human behavior to be able to put together his theory of Psychological Types and publishing it in his famous book “Psychologische Typen, 1921”.

Cognitive Functions

Jung’s work divided people into two main categories: Introverts (Inward-looking) and Extroverts (Outward-looking).

In short, introverts are people who focus on their own feelings and thinking, observing how the surrounding events would affect them.

Extroverts on the other hand focus on the effect of their actions on the world and people around them.

Furthermore, Jung found that the human brain is hardwired from birth.

Four cognitive functions determine how a person would behave in a certain situation, and why.

Feeling, thinking, sensing, and intuition all together form the foundation of human cognitive behavior.
