(Korean drama) ๐ŸŒŸ ๐ŸŒŸ ๐ŸŒŸ ๐ŸŒŸ 4/5

This is a heart-wrenching story about a woman who tries to reunite with her daughter despite hostile circumstances.

There are four main characters in this story. Ji Eun Soo, who is framed for her husbandโ€™s murder, serves time in prison, and is forced to abandon her daughter who is born in jail. Kang Ji Min, a journalist who tries to find the truth behind Ji Eun Sooโ€™s conviction, and adopts Ji Eun Sooโ€™s daughter, by an act of serendipity. Kang Woo Joo, Ji Eun Sooโ€™s adorable daughter. And Kim Ho Ran, the vicious, ruthless and powerful MIL of Ji Eun Soo, who leaves no stone unturned to torment Ji Eun Soo and separate her from Kang Woo Joo. Once released from prison, Ji Eun Soo decides to date Kang Ji Min in order to become Kang Woo Jooโ€™s mother by any means possible. The story is about how the truth is unravelled and Ji Eun Soo reunites with her daughter.

Lee Yoo Ri is in an unusually low-key, sad and timid role, but her beauty shines through, nevertheless. She has given a convincing performance as the tormented Ji Eun Soo. Yeon Jung Hoon, has given a steady and mature portrayal of Kang Ji Min. Lee Il Hwaโ€™s portrayal of the ruthless chaebol Kim Ho Ran was phenomenal and quite creepy. Go Na Hee was incredibly cute, and a wonderful child actor. The rest of the cast are all very good actors and have given commendable performances.

The first two episodes were the toughest to watch. The torment that Ji Eun Soo goes through was intolerable. Also, in the first half of the drama, Ji Eun Soo, Secretary Yoon and Kang Ji Min kept telling the evil woman Kim Ho Ran about all their plans beforehand. It was bravado backed by zilch, and was immeasurably stupid! As Kim Ho Ran went about calmly destroying everyoneโ€™s lives, it showed how pathetic and clueless the rest of them were in trying to actually find a way out. Ji Eun Soo was extremely dumb in all her dealings with Kim Ho Ran, while Kim Ho Ran was smart, cunning, ruthless and unrepentant, and it was unbearably frustrating to watch the scenes between the two of them. I was so disheartened that I wanted to ask the writers, if, for once, they could write a script where the good guys were smart, and not pathetic like this? It was only towards the last few episodes of the drama that I was able to watch it without feeling dejected. Nevertheless, the behind the scenes footage at the very end were a welcome relief, after watching such a serious drama.

Overall, this is a depressing, very serious drama, with some good acting.

Love writing. I like to understand the psyche of people I meet, even more than their life story.
