We received the email containing the links to the QJA Journal volume 14 number 2 for Winter 2017 on 6 June. There were above average numbers of workshops, forums and other branch activities to report upon as well the usual president’s report and board governance matters. The papers for the upcoming AGM and State Conference in Toowoomba occupy their fair share of pages.

Three key new developments each receive an informative article:

  • Police Production Notices, where out of date mistaken advice given in the Autumn 2017 Journal is corrected
  • Advance Health Directive for Mental Health, with a direct link to the guide and form embedded in more detailed information about the form content
  • National Mortgage Form, again a more detailed follow-up of the note in the May QJA email newsletter (link to online NMF for all states)

It was good to receive a heads-up about the new My eQuals system for digital student qualification records. This will result in a steadily decreasing demand for JPs to certify copies of qualification certificates.

As usual pages 12 and 13 making up the Q&A section must be read carefully as the questions and answers form the beating pulse of current JP signing practice. The content this quarter:

Q1 Signature placement in EPA documents

Q2 Note that a JP is considered to be a Commissioner for Oaths to permit witnessing documents from Commonwealth

Q3 Changing the wording of the certified copy certificate when witnessing a true copy of an existing certified copy

Q4 How to witness a Land Registry Form 9 — Easement, and worthy of a separate article

Q5 How to advise a client that presents an ordinary letter for witnessing — suggest it be modified to or rewritten as a Stat Dec

Q6 Supposed advice on witnessing a Divorce Application affidavit

As always the QJA Journal is a fount of information for all JPs and Cdecs.
