You’ll Never Be Ready — So Just Start

Life isn’t about getting it right, it’s about figuring things out along the way

I’m not a runner by any means, but I didn’t let that stop me from running a 10K last year. My friends had signed up for a hip hop run and when I saw the thick faux gold chain on the medal, I was sold.

Running is not my thing and I avoided training even though the race was coming up. The last time I ran was a few months prior; my race prep the night before was rest and carb-loading on pasta.

To say I wasn’t prepared is an understatement. Half the route was on a steep incline over not-so-gently rolling hills, I’d never run that far before, it was a foggy and cold 7am call time in January, and did I mention that running is one of my least favorite work outs?

I didn’t let any of that stop me.

The lack of prep, the pain in my legs, and the voice in my head telling me to quit — it didn’t matter what was in my way, I focused on finishing and so I did.

In life, you won’t always be prepared. You won’t always have the perfect conditions. You won’t have all the resources. You won’t be ready to do whatever it is you need to do to accomplish your goals.

That’s life - no one is ever perfectly ready for anything.

If you stop and wait for the perfect time and conditions to align, you’ll never start. Life isn’t about getting it right, it’s about figuring things out along the way. Isn’t it more interesting to stumble and make mistakes rather than cut ourselves off from new experiences because of fear? Who we are is forged in moments of uncertainty, during which all we can do is bring the best of ourselves to the table and make the best decisions we can with what we have.

When we give ourselves permission to start, we give ourselves permission to explore. Give up your ideas of what things will be like and allow them be what they are.

Life is an adventure and the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Take your steps forward even when you’re not ready — otherwise you’ll always be stuck at the starting line and you’ll never know how you could have finished.
