Web Maker with js13kGames Mode and Kontra.js

We are halfway through the competition, but it’s still more than two weeks before the submission deadline, and I still see new people joining in and asking “where do I start?”.

Web Maker with js13kGames Mode

Here’s a quick reminder: Kushagra Gour, who is an author of the Web Maker tool, has prepared something special for the js13kGames competition participants this year.

Web Maker itself is a front-end playground with offline functionality, and because of our collaboration, it now have js13kGames Mode which converts Web Maker into an all-you-need environment to develop your game:

  • HTML5 Canvas game template to get started with
  • Realtime estimate of your game size after zipping
  • Download game as zip
  • Top it with the Code-blast mode to turn your game development experience into a gaming experience
  • Game development resources help

Another cool thing about Web Maker is that you can start your project from scratch, or pick the predefined template using Kontra.js game engine, one of the most popular microlibraries used in the js13kGames competition.

Pick Kontra

If you still have no idea how to begin, you can follow this great tutorial on how to build an Asteroids game with Kontra.js and Web Maker from the author of the Kontra.js game engine, Steven Lambert. I’ve used it as the first resource of choice to dive into if you’re brand new to the competition and it looks like it’s doing the job right so far.

Be sure to check the details in this Medium post by Kushagra and give it a try!
