Due to a variety of historical factors (read: colonialism and Western hegemony, among others), there are several countries abroad that speak English. However, many English-speaking destinations are also overrun with tourists from other English-speaking countries.
We picked our five favorite cities around the world where English is an official or main language, including both off-the-beaten path and more classic destinations, so you can get some inspiration for your next adventure!

St. John’s, Canada
You probably know that Canada is an amazing English-speaking travel destination, whether you are going to Whistler for skiing or Montreal for that proto-European feel. But have you heard of St. John’s? If not, the capital of Newfoundland should 100% be the destination on your next plane ticket.
St. John’s is one of the oldest cities in North America, and with that comes an incredible history. Whether you are a history buff or not though, you’ll love touring Cabot Tower, where Marconi successfully got the first trans-Atlantic wire signal.
While you are at Signal Hill, you can also see amazing views overlooking the city.
Looking to dust off your hiking boots? St. John’s covers that too. Check out Deadman’s Bay Trail for some unreal views around the eponymous bay. Or, head to the Burma Road Trail, an easier alternative that still promises some real scenic sites.

Valletta, Malta
Valletta is the most exciting European city that you’ve never heard of. No, seriously. It has all the architectural, culinary, natural, and commercial delights of major European cities like Paris or Florence, but without the massive throngs of English speakers.
Walk around town and scope out your favorite galleria, a protruding and colorful architectural feature found on most traditional Maltese buildings. Then wander into the inner city square, where you can see history come alive in front of your very eyes.
We recommend checking out the beautiful ruins of the Old Opera House and St. George’s Square, for all you history buffs out there.
History not your thing? No worries — Valletta has something for everyone. Want to try some local cuisine? Wander until you find a pastizzi shop, a traditional pastry with a scrumptious filling inside. The shops are scattered throughout the town, and each one is better than the next.
Looking for some adventure? Malta has over 1,300 climbing routes for the intrepid at heart, and many different styles of climbing are well-suited to the crags of Valletta. Check out this site for more information on which route is right for you.

Singapore
Since the release of Crazy Rich Asians, Singapore has been making a splash in the travel world, so head there now before it becomes an (over)popular destination.
It is a great destination for English speakers. Although Malay is the national language according to the Constitution, English has become the common working language across Singapore.
Our favorite thing we recommend doing in this Southeast Asian gem? Eating! Check out the amazing Hawker Centers around town, which offer amazing food options at low prices.

If you are looking to do something in Singapore between your meals, check out Singapore’s botanic gardens, which house the world’s largest orchid garden. It’s a beautiful sight to behold and well worth the visit!

Cebu, Philippines
The official languages of the Philippines are both Tagalog and English, so it is a great English-speaking destination for those looking for language familiarity. Plus, Cebu is the oldest urban center in the Philippines, so if you’re searching for a historian’s dream, you’ve come to the right place.
There are many local historical buildings that are worth a visit. Definitely check out Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral to get a sense of Filipino culture and the centrality of religion, as well as the beautiful Taoist temple.
Looking to flex those muscles in an outdoor activity and escape the bustling city? Climb to the top of Osmeña Peak, the stunningly beautiful site that represents the highest point in Cebu. It isn’t the most challenging hike, making it appropriate for the whole family, but still offers unreal scenic views at the top. Plus, there are many amazing waterfalls to stop at as you drive the two hours to reach the base from Cebu City, so no one will be bored on the ride.

San Ignacio, Belize
English is the official language of Belize, making it a perfect destination for English-speakers looking to stay inside their linguistic comfort zone when visiting Central America. San Ignacio, the heart of Belizean Mayan culture, is well-worth a visit for those looking to explore and adventure.
While visiting the historical sites in Belize tend to be expensive (many are much easier with tour guides and some have steep entrance fees), we definitely recommend carving out time and money for at least one.
From San Ignacio, you can climb one of three ancient Mayan Pyramids found in the area. Cahal Pech is located right within San Ignacio, and is well-worth a visit to see Mayan history first-hand. Plus, the entrance fee is comparatively low, at $5 USD.
Definitely head to the Rainforest Medicinal Trail next, which is a hike above the Macal River for just a $5 entrance plus a $5 guide. You’ll be surrounded by medicinal plants used by the Maya, and can learn all about their scientific history surrounded by dazzling views of the forest.
Finally, don’t skip San Ignacio’s market, full of vibrant fruits and vegetables and scrumptious culinary delights. It is a great way to learn about the local culture and day-to-day life of the city.
