American Slang. Part 2
Hello! Today I will tell you about some new words from American slang.
Let’s start!
- Ain’t
In fact, it is just a shortened verb “to be” with a negative (am/is/are not = ain’t)
You ain’t going home tonight!
2. Aight — everything all right
This is short for all right.
I’m aight, thanks!
3. A-ok — everything all right
Another way to say that everything is fine with you. The American equivalent of the British expression hunky-dory.
Don’t worry, everything’s gonna be a-ok.
4. Banana oil — to keep back, to lie, to flatter
In Russian, this is “hang noodles on your ears”, but in American — pour banana oil into your ears.
Stop! It’s banana oil. I know the truth.
5. Bounce — to get out
In slang, it is said about the fact of leaving.
I’m gonna bounce outta here.
6. Gross — vile, nasty, unpleasant
The American equivalent of the British minging.
Stop picking your nose, it’s gross!
7. Jerk — болван
That’s what Americans say about a stupid, annoying person.
Do you know Matthew? What a jerk, isn’t he?
8. Lit — something very cool
It is a new word to express something stunning is much stronger in emotional coloring than just cool or crazy.
That was lit!
9. Yummy — delicious
This is how Americans talk about something very appetizing and unrealistically delicious.
This is the best cake I’ve ever had. Yummy!
10. Dunno
Simply dunno means “I don’t know”. This way you can respond faster, with less effort. This expression is common among young people.
But be careful, and think who you can say. If you tell your boss or a senior, it will be rude. To be sure, speak only to people of your own age or younger, sometimes to subordinates.
- What are you doing for Spring Break?
- Dunno, I was thinking Mexico again. You?
- Dunno yet!
That’s all for today! Learn and use!
