Checking out a new Wine Bar and Celtics Basketball

Not less than a day after Boston was hit by a third nor’easter in 10 days (we ended up with almost 22" of snow), I entertained business colleagues Thursday evening at a new wine bar in town and a (heartbreaking) basketball game.

We began the evening at City Winery Boston in the newly built One Canal residential building straddling the North End and TD Garden. Billed as a music venue/wine bar featuring Mediterranean food, the vibe in the restaurant was nice but not Mediterranean at all. (Neither was the menu.) The dining room was very long and while we had a somewhat large party (six people), I’m surprised we were sat at the very, very, very far end of the dining room by ourselves when the restaurant was mostly empty. It made us feel very unconnected with the remaining restaurant and I think our service suffered.

The food was OK — some good, some not so good. The wild rice risotto balls were very good, along with the maple-sriracha fried cauliflower. The hummus plate was good but needed more pita chips — the ratio of chips to hummus was very much out of proportion. The Mongolian grilled baby back spare ribs were OK and the margarita “flatbread” wasn’t a flatbread — just standard pizza that wasn’t very exciting. I shared the New England seafood stew with my husband and it wasn’t good at all. It smelled like fish (not in a good way) and the broth was very thick. Not very appetizing at all. Overall, I may come back to check out the music venue but I’m not excited to try the menu again.

We finished the night at the Celtics basketball game at TD Garden. My company seats are ridiculously close to the court and it is hard not to enjoy a game even if you aren’t the biggest basketball fan. As a televised ESPN game, the game dragged longer than it should have in regulation play. And it became even looooooonger with two overtimes. The C’s lost at the very last second, which was disappointing since we were leading for most of the game, but considering how decimated our team was going into the game with player injuries, it wasn’t a bad performance.
