Dan and I didn’t have any set plans for dinner Friday night and we made a last minute decision to go to Giulia’s, as the cool evening put me in a mood for Italian food. Like every other meal we’ve had there, we had an excellent dinner while sitting at the bar.

I asked our bartender, Terry, for a Fall-inspired cocktail, and he came up with something pear-flavored with bourbon in it. It was excellent and the sweetness from the pear was the perfect compliment to the bourbon.

Cocktails

For dinner, we started with the Prosciutto di Parma with fresh pears, figs, pine nuts, mugolio and aged parmigiano. The prosciutto melted in your mouth and the pears were an excellent accoutrement. The figs were stuffed with cheese and topped with pine nuts, which was very good. I only wish there was more cheese with this course besides the small portion of shaved parmigiano.

Next, we shared the Sweet Corn and Ricotta Agnolotti pasta with chanterelle mushrooms, parmigiano, and fresh black truffles. You could taste the sweetness of the fresh corn in the pasta, which was a nice contrast to the richness and Earthiness of the black truffles. Truffles are the perfect Fall food, as it makes you think about the dampness of a forest after a rain where Earthy mushrooms thrive. The pasta was perfectly cooked and was incredibly light when you ate it.

We ended our meal with the Whole Grilled Mackerel with eggplant caponata, tomatillo, pine nuts, capers, and olives. We also had a side of blue beans with a spicy sauce. The mackerel was de-boned, which makes eating a whole fish much more enjoyable. The fish was light, flakey, and the char on the skin was perfect. The eggplant caponata was also really good and its heaviness was a great contrast to the lightness of the fish. I loved the blue beans, which reminded me of a larger version of edamame with an edible skin. I don’t know what was in the spicy sauce, but it was very good.

Overall, we had another great meal at Giulia’s, which is fast becoming one of our favorite go-to places when we are in the mood for some Italian comfort food.
